What is your personal background in vascular nursing (how long have you worked in the vascular field, did you practice something before, etc.)?I have only been in the vascular surgery realm since January of last year. Prior to working in vascular, I had most recently worked with an employer's clinic providing family care and cardiology prior to that. Vascular surgery chose me and for that I will forever be grateful. Even though I have only been part of the vascular surgery world for a year and a half, I have learned so much from my very supportive colleagues and SVS/SVN memberships. What is your favorite aspect of vascular nursing?I am passionate and educating patients about their vascular disease whether venous, arterial or lymphatic and giving them sense of control over their vascular diagnosis. Within our department, we further discuss our patient as a team to formulate patient centered goals. One of my favorite activities is discussing the outcomes of our deliberations with the patient and watching them light up knowing that they are supported by many.
What is the most challenging part of your job as a vascular nurse? The biggest challenge that is faced in my current role is navigating through the ever changing insurance strings to provide the safest and most effective vascular care. Several of our patients are suffering with diagnoses in need of procedures that insurance companies are not willing to cover due to the everchanging regulations. Have there been changes in your work force? How so?Our department has been fortunate to not have experienced provider layoffs with the current healthcare status. However, that doesn’t mean that we are free of the added responsibilities that are absorbed by providers with support staff leaving or being relieved of their positions. What are your personal goals within the vascular field (implement protocols, increase patient volume, research, societal involvement, etc.)?Within this small timeframe of being within vascular surgery, my goals are to help others learn and understand the small vascular surgery specialty by developing educational resources from a nurse practitioner and nursing care understanding. There are several surgeon educational materials, but not many geared at educating fellow allied providers or nurses.
What is a “fun fact” about yourself that you would like others to know? One fun fact about me – I’m the black sheep of my family… I grew up in the back of an automotive/mechanical and autobody shop that my family owns and still runs. My mom, dad, brother, sister, brother-in-law still run the business. My path took me to healthcare which is probably safer for all involved. I can’t tell you what’s ailing your vehicle, but can restart your heart and help you with your vessels much more effectively. |
